6 STRANDED MEN TAKEN FROM ISLE BY COAST GUARD
Driving their boat through heavy ice floes, the Plum Island coast guard crew under Chief Boatswain’s Mate John Glaza last Thursday succeeded in removing six men from Chambers Island, after the group had been marooned there for a period of several days. Included in the group were Herman Krause of Sawyer, in charge of the crew of wood choppers, William Mickle, Henry Mickle, Herman Roberts, John Phillips and J. Seville. They had spent since February cutting wood on the island, and succeeded in making trips back and forth to the mainland over the ice. However, when the break-up of Green bay ice left them stranded with no other means of communication except the telephone they requested assistance from the coast guard.
The Sturgeon Bay crew attempted to reach the island on Wednesday, but was prevented because of heavy ice conditions and requested that the Plum Island crew try its luck, believing that there was more open water between Chambers Island and the Door than existed to the south of the Island. The Plum Island crew covered approximately 80 miles in making the trip, and landed the stranded wood choppers at Gills Rock.
It was stated the crew expected to return to the island by boat this week to complete operations.
