A Shower of Frogs
—
Remarkable Occurrence Which Took Place Near This City.
A curious and interesting phenomenon is reported in connection with the wind and rain storm which passed over this part of the country at an early hour last Saturday morning. Wm. Schneider, who resides on the bay shore a few miles north of this city, and who is engaged in fishing, was out lifting his nets during the rain and upon coming ashore he noticed several small frogs in his boat. As he was quite certain they were not there when he went out he could explain their presence in no other way than that they had rained down. After coming ashore he hitched up his team and drove to this city. While on his way here he passed over a short piece of road that seemed to be literally alive with small frogs similar to those observed in his boat earlier in the morning. The only conclusion that could be arrived at by Mr. Schneider, in view of the facts related, was that that locality had been treated to a shower of frogs during the morning. The animals were small, being only about half an inch long, and dark colored. Such occurrences as this have been reported before from various parts of the country but as a general thing the public is somewhat incredulous in regard to them. It is claimed by some that the frogs do not rain down but that the falling of rain brings them out of their hiding places on the ground so they can be seen. This theory would not account for the presence of the frogs in Mr. Schneider's boat and it does not seem as if there can be any reason for doubting that they actually fell from the sky. As a considerable squall of wind accompanied the rain it is probable that at some distance from here a cyclone carried the frogs up from the earth and carried them along with it until its force was spent when they dropped to the ground.
