Beach, Playground Openings Successful
Commodores Give Beaches New Play Equipment Here
An announcement from the Commodore club stating that it had recently purchased about $100 worth of additional play equipment for the two Sturgeon Bay beaches came just as the city was happily accepting the opening of the playgrounds and the beaches for the summer.
All projects in the city—the two beaches and the four playgrounds—opened officially Monday with supervised play offered children and grown-ups alike.
Two New Docks
Cold weather hampered the opening of the beaches somewhat, but it permitted the recreation department to proceed with its installations of H-type instruction docks, at both Otumba beach and Sunset beach, that will permit the life guards and swimming instructors to more efficiently teach swimming on the beaches. H-type docks were also decided upon because of the ease with which younger children can be taught to swim from them.
On opening day at the respective playgrounds, Director Bob Westfall urged parents to bring their children over and get acquainted, not only with the playground directors themselves, but with the program and the equipment, and the turn-out was excellent, he stated.
Over 60 youngsters attended the Sunrise opening, 70 were recorded at Sunset Homes, 60 reported at Otumba beach and playground, and about 100 at the Sunset beach and playground. Switching the playgrounds to the beaches and running the two of them simultaneously has worked out well, according to the department.
No further information was available on the wading pool for Sunset beach park, but Mr. Westfall stated that two excellent miniature golf courses had been secured for both the beach playgrounds. Momentarily, putters appeared to be a problem but a gracious donation of 12 of them from the Pines resort solved the problem.
A figure on the wading pool is being sought by promoters of the idea, after which necessary funds will be raised by popular subscription.
