Beans, Grain In Harvest
Mrs. Henry Lawson. Corres.
E. MAPLEWOOD — All roads lead to the Henry Runke farm these days. The bean station is open and beans, that is the string beans of all shapes and sizes, are pouring in. Naturally most everyone who raises beans tries to pick the small ones for those are the ones that bring in the most cash. We need rain badly now for beans and cukes in dry weather do not grow long and graceful like they should but verge on the nubby type.
Last Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. John Kreeley and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Stern and family, Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Roalkvam, Hainesville, had a picnic supper on the Edson Stevens lawn. It was a very enjoyable affair for the two women from Chicago are cousins of Mrs. Stevens. So the gals had 20 years of talking to catch up on. They had not seen each other in that length of time.
That evening the school board had a session at the Stevens. This time they didn't leave their wives at all. Brought them and the whole family. The Franklin Jomes and the Wally Gigsteads were there.
The Hughie Blrdsalls and their 4 youngest girls, Judy, Frances, Mary and Theresa went over to help Tony Birdsall celebrate his birthday at the home of his parents, the Lawrence Birdsalls, west of Maplewood. They all went sailing along in the truck and stopped just long enough to let our girl Spike Bachhuber off at our place. The Birdsalls have practically adopted Spike the past two weeks during cherry picking time. Marlon says. “What’s another girl?” That made 7 girls in their household.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Nielson and family, Lavonia, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Runke and Grandma Hyde, Algoma, called on the Henry Runkes a week ago last Sunday.
Shocking but true. That’s what the Messrs. and Mmes. Gerald Kramer, Gerald Uecker, Virgil Mueller, Eddie Clark, Lynn Bauman and Wally Gigstead and families did before and after after they enjoyed a boiled trout dinner at the Ralph Ueckers, last Sunday afternoon. Of course every one went to church and then hurried to the fields to shock the grain which had been cut on Saturday. Naturally they all worked up good appetites which made the trout more “delishus” than ever.
Susie Smith of Mayville called on her friend Miss Karen Bachhuber at the Stevens last Sunday morning while enroute to look at Door county’s scenic beauty.
Henry and I spent an enjoyable day last Sunday. We were dinner and of course supper guests of Grace and Leo Seiler and their daughter Alice at their home on 4th st., in Algoma. Other guests were Mrs. C. A. G. Heilegstadt and son Pat, Ruth Evans and Charles Henry and the Misses Gertrude and Sarah Anderegg, Algoma. During the afternoon Grace showed slides of past events which brought forth many a chuckle. She also took pictures of the group which we’ll be anxious to see even if I’ll look like something the cat dragged in. It was a nice day. We were with good friends, laughed a lot and had good and beautiful food. The beautiful refers to the salad which Alice made. It looked just like the pictures in the book, something which I am never able to achieve. During the afternoon Arch Mitts from Sturgeon Bay called, as did his daughter Jean and husband Kenny Nieman and their daughters Nancy and Carol, Manitowoc.
Mesdames Frank Peroutky, Joe Stevens and David Sullivan spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wacek.
