Biblical Books Good Lenten Reading Fare
The discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls and a general resurgence has considerably stepped up interest in the Bible in recent years. Now that the Lenten season is well underway, various versions of the Bible, books about it and novels based on Biblical characters are in constant demand.
Available at the library are both the Protestant King James version of the Bible and the Catholic Douay version, in addition to many other translations.
A number of translations of the Bible into modern English can be obtained. The Revised Standard Version, which was completed in 1952 after twenty years of work, is the most important of these and has been called by far the best translation for present day Protestant readers. The recently-published New Testament in Modern English by J. B. Phillips, is a one-volume edition of four of the religious writer's earlier books. Also available is the New Testament in Basic English.
Bible study groups are increasing and a number of handbooks to aid in the study and teaching of the Bible are available, including such titles as How To Read the Bible by Edgar Goodspeed, Guide to Understanding the Bible by Harry Fosdick; and the Comprehensive Concordance to the Holy Scriptures.
Other selections are the Dartmouth Bible; The Bible Designed to Be Read As Living Literature and The Bible As a Common Reader by Mary Chase.
Light is thrown on Biblical history, geography and life in such books as Werner Keller's The Bible As History, Eric Heaton's Everyday Life In Old Testament Times, Albert Bailey's Daily Life In Bible Times, Francis Clark's In Christ's Own Country, Harold Hunting's Story of Our Bible, How It Grew To Be What It Is, The Picture History of the Bible and Christianity in 1,000 Pictures, Paul Ilton's The Bible Was My Treasure Map, Lands of the Bible by Terriers and various books on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Novels based on the Bible are also frequently requested by patrons. One of the best known authors of Biblical fiction is Sholom Asch. His novels include The Prophet, The Nazarene, The Apostle and others. Readers have also enjoyed books by Lloyd C. Douglas, such as The Robe and The Silver Chalice and novels by other authors of Biblical fiction such as Frank Slaughter and Esther Kellner.
