“Coastal program gaining approval” from the March 3, 1977 Door County Advocate
Coastal program gaining approval
A preliminary coastal management program proposal for Wisconsin gained the approval of two statewide advisory bodies late last week after nearly three full days of discussion and debate.
A public forum to further define problem areas and obtain the views of citizens living in coastal areas has been planned for 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10 at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical Institute in Green Bay.
The primary goals of the proposal is to preserve, protect, develop and wherever possible, to restore or enhance the resources of Wisconsin’s shorelands.
At a joint meeting held in Mishicot, the Coastal Coordinating and Advisory Council and the Citizens Advisory Committee approved five program objectives geared towards improving the management of Wisconsin’s extensive coastal resources.
These objectives include providing a strong voice for coastal advocacy in Wisconsin, improving public awareness and ability to participate in decisions affecting the Great Lakes, improving program coordination among the various state agencies (plus federal and regional) and bettering the enforcement of state regulations dealing with key coastal areas.
Bruce Loppnow, coastal planner with Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission, is the moderator at the March 10 meeting. Speakers are Rep. Sharon K. Metz, David Owens, and Nancy Schreiber.
