“County Swim Classes Due” from the June 29, 1950 Door County Advocate
County Swim Classes Due
Open Monday at B. H., Jacksonport; None Tuesday Because of Holiday
Red Cross swimming classes for all children outside of Sturgeon Bay will begin next week with Jack Murray again serving as instructor.
Classes will be held each morning at one community and in the afternoon at another from Monday through Thursday. Classes will be held at Washington Island each Friday morning. Morning class hours will be from 9:30 until 12 and those in the afternoon will be from 1:30 to 4.
Schedule Given
The weekly schedule, which will go into effect next Monday morning, will be as follows:
Monday—Baileys Harbor, morning; Jacksonport, afternoon.
Tuesday—Sister Bay, morning; Ellison Bay afternoon.
Wednesday—Fish Creek, morning; Ephraim, afternoon.
Thursday—Sand bay (near Little Sturgeon), morning; Egg Harbor, afternoon.
Friday—Washington Island, afternoon.
Due to the Fourth of July holiday, however, there will be no Tuesday classes next week. Opening classes for Sister Bay and Ellison Bay will occur Tuesday, July 11.
There will be classes for beginners, intermediates, swimmers and adults and life savers during each of the instruction sessions. The afternoon classes will be in that order, but in the morning the order of classes will be intermediates, beginners, swimmers and adults and lifesavers. This change was made to keep the younger beginners out of the cooler early morning water.
Registration On
All children must have their parents’ signatures on forms provided in order to attend the classes, and no children under six years of age will be accepted. Registrations were being held at each of the beaches this week, but students may still register next week. The classes will continue through August 31, and standard Red Cross tests must be passed to advance from one class to another.
Water tests are being taken at each of the beaches and sent to Madison to make sure that the areas are safe for swimming.
In many of the communities, the men’s clubs or other organizations are cooperating by improving the beach areas through the addition of swimming docks and rafts. Efforts are also being made to place competent life beach supervisors on duty in each area when the instructor is not present.
