“DAR honors Mary Arens” from the March 23, 1971 Door County Advocate
DAR honors Mary Arens
Mrs. Ludolph (Mary) Arens, a summer resident of Idlewild since 1923, was recognized recently at Green Bay where she lives during the winter months, for 50 years of service with the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The members of the Jean Nicolet chapter at a meeting at the home of Mrs. John S. Pfeifer, conferred honors on Mrs. Arens and presented her with an American flag and pin.
Mrs. Arens became affiliated with the DAR while living in Detroit, Mich. and when she and her husband, the late Professor Ludolph Arens, moved to Appleton she became a charter member of that DAR group and its first regent.
Coming to Green Bay in 1929 she became active in that organization, having served as vice regent, active and corresponding secretary, chaplain for several terms and is presently serving again as chaplain. She is also associated with a DAR chapter in Santa Monica, Calif.
Mrs. Arens taught speech and drama at Lawrence university while a resident of Appleton and later taught at St. Joseph’s Academy as well as having private students in drama and speech.
At Idlewild Mr. and Mrs. Arens established the Arens Art Colony where a selected group of students studied music and drama. Prof. Arens had been head Piano teacher at Lawrence university and professor of music at Walter Larson conservatory. Both were highly respected for their cultural roles.
Mrs. Arens’ many Idlewild friends were delighted to hear of her recognition and award. They add their good wishes to those already received.
