DOORS WILL PLAY PACKERS JAN. 28
—————
Fast Two-County Five Books First Local Appearance
——— ———
In a game at Algoma Wednesday night, the Kewaunee Doors beat the strong Green Bay Packers 33-24, keeping up their record of no defeats this season.
—————
The Green Bay Packers basketball team, made up of stars from the national championship football team, will perform at the new Sturgeon Bay High school gym next week Thursday night, January 28, in a game that is expected to fill every available seat.
The game was booked by the Kewaunee Doors, a fast squad consisting of four Door county stars and three Kewaunee county stars under the management of Ray Birdsall of Algoma. In three starts, the Door have annexed victories, beating principally the Chicago H---------, famous negro aggregation, and last week the Alphia Sweets from Green Bay, state amateur champs in 1931. All games so far have been played at the Dug-Out in Algoma, but a couple of feature contests, including the House of David team, will be played in the local gym if a sufficiently good attendance marks the Packer game here next week. The House of David and also Al Seegar’s Indians have already been booked at the Dug-out for February, and next week Wednesday night the Doors will meet the strong Kohler team there.
The line-up of the Kewaunee Doors consists of the following, together with the names of schools at which the players starred:
Bill Hunt of Algoma, River Falls Teachers college; Bud Manion of Algoma, River Falls Teachers college; Lycan Miller of Sturgeon Bay, University of Wisconsin; Pete Perry of Forestville, Algoma High school; Lefty Case of Algoma, River Falls Teachers college; Harold VanHorne, Gibraltar High coach, Milwaukee Teachers college; and Fred Kittlinger, Sevastopol High coach, Platteville Teachers college. Hunt and Case are forwards; Miller, center; and Manion, Perry, VanHorne and Kittlinger, guards.
The Packer line-up this season is the same as last year with the addition of Hank Bruder, formerly of Northwestern university. The players are Johnny Blood and Arnold Herber, forwards; Wuert Engleman, center; and Mike Michalske, Bruder and Dave Zuidmuilder, guards.
When the Packers played here last year against the Sturgeon Bay city team, they were met by a packed house that could not find seating accommodations. This year, however, the new gym has ample capacity for more than 500 spectators without crowding.
A preliminary game will be played here next week between the C. B. A.’s of Algoma and a Sturgeon Bay city team beginning at 7:30 o’clock. The Packer game will begin at approximately 8:30 o’clock.

PACKERS NOSE OUT DOORS HERE 27-26

Big Crowd Sees Tilt; Herber Stars With 6 Baskets
—————
A Green Bay Packer rally in the fourth quarter featuring four baskets in rapid succession by Herber, another by Hank Bruder to tie the score, and a last-minute heave from mid-floor by Mike Michalske, nosed out the strong Kewaunee-Doors of Algoma 27 to 26 here last week Thursday night before a crowd of about 400 persons. A week before the Doors playing at Algoma beat the Packers easily 33 to 24.
The ability of the Packers, particularly Herber and Dave Zuidmueller, to shoot from a distance, spelled the Door’s downfall, but Bruder, displaying marked skill and aggressiveness on rebound plays, also was a factor not to be overlooked.
For the Doors, the diminutive Manion was the outstanding performer, both from a standpoint of guarding his weighty opponents and in shooting. Manion was high scorer for his team, getting, three short shots and one from outside the free throw circle, in addition to making three free throws out of six chances. Miller, former Wisconsin ace, clearly displayed his Big Ten conference caliber by the way he handled the ball and on three occasions pivoted, side-stepped and dribbled in for short shots against heavy odds. Hunt, although not a high scorer, played a pretty floor game, as did Case at forward, while VanHorne, Kittlinger and Perry each performed well in guard positions.
Slow Start
After getting off to a slow start with only two points scored in the first quarter, a field goal by Manion for the Doors, the game livened up in the second period and ran neck and neck until the half which ended 13 to 12 in favor of the Packers. Herber tied the score at the start of the second quarter with a short shot and then tied it again with a long shot after Miller had rolled in a close one. Manion put the Doors in the lead with a pretty short shot, but Bruder making two baskets on rebounds and then a free throw on Kittlinger’s personal gave the Packers a margin of 9 to 6. Dave Zuidmueller, who went in for his brother George, added two more points to the lead with a pretty shot from outside the free throw circle, and a couple of minutes later duplicated to offset a nice shot from the corner by Case, Algoma forward.
Trailing by five points and with the half almost over, the Doors put on a fast spurt that resulted in two field goals. Manion put on one of the thrills of the evening when he took the ball deep in his own territory and dribbled the full length of the floor to get the first marker. A minute later Miller got the second on a quick toss after receiving a short pass close to the basket.
Doors Open Drive
In the third quarter, the Doors scored eight points to the Packers’ two to get a 20 to 15 lead. Manion tied the score with a free throw out of two gift shots resulting from Herber’s multiple personal, and Miller and Hunt each made short shots. Miller added another on a free throw, and Manion wound up the period with a field goal from close range. Michalske caged the only points for the visitors that quarter, getting a basket from outside the free throw circle.
Held to only two baskets and having a good many chances, Herber in the fourth quarter opened up in his characteristic form and connected with four field goals in succession, while the Doors made only two, one by Hunt from the corner of the court and a cripple by Kittlinger after receiving a floor - length pass wide open. The drive left the Packers trailing by only one point, 24 to 23, but Manion dropped two free throws through the hoop on Dave Zuidmueller’s personal to gain what was believed to be a safe margin of three points with only a couple of minutes to go.
Michalske’s Shot Wins
Manager Ray Birdsall put Miller and Perry back into the game in an effort to keep the lead, but Bruder came through with his third party rebound shot to come within one point of a tie. Close guarding held the Packers to the mid-floor area as they made a determined attempt to finish their rally. Shots were few with the Doors resorting to short passes in an effort to keep possession of the ball, but suddenly. Mike Michalske appeared in the open at mid-floor on the south side of the court poised for a long shot. The ball made a pretty arch and dropped through the ring for the two points that determined the final score.
After the tip-off, the Doors took the ball, and with only a second to go, Manion attempted a field goal from close under the basket. The ball was in the air when the horn blew but it rolled off the ring. Following up like a flash Miller made a pretty catch and an overhand shot good for a basket but it was too late to count. Had Manion's toss gone in, the Doors would have added another victory to their string.
