EGG HARBOR.
A silver watch belonging to Mrs. Olive Thomas was raffled for at Mike Carmody’s on Saturday evening, August 22d. One hundred and ten tickets were sold at twenty-five cents each, and the winning number was held by Joseph Carmody.
The present term of school in the third district began in May and will close in November. It is in charge of John F. Yost, who has few superiors in this county as an instructor, his school being in several respects a model worthy of imitation. It is understood that upon the completion of his engagement here Mr. Yost will take charge of the village school in Bay View.
So many bears have been seen in this vicinity recently as to justify the belief that “the woods are full of them.” Several weeks ago a bear entered the pasture of Michael Hayes and seized a young pig. He threw his victim over the fence, and was following for the purpose of lugging him off and having a square meal when he was frightened and made his escape. The neck of the pig was badly torn, but the animal is recovering and will come out of the conflict all right. About a week ago a bear visited the premises of John Shuster and killed a sow, but being unable to carry it away was obliged to content himself with so much of the pork as he could devour, leaving the remainder on the ground. Toward nightfall one evening of week before last Mrs. Chas. Root, accompanied by a brother and one of her children, were returning home from pasture with a cow when a bear was seen in the road a short distance in advance of the party. A hasty retreat was made to the residence of John F. Yost, who immediately went upon the war-path, but when he arrived at the scene ursa major had left for a more genial climate. Not long ago Mrs. Charles Kreuger heard a disturbance in her hen-house, in the early morning, and upon looking in that direction saw on the roof of the coop what she supposed to be a porcupine. Upon approaching the coop she discovered that her supposed porcupine was the head of a bear projecting through the roof which it had torn open to get into the hennery. The bear had a chicken in his mouth, and as soon as he found that the police were after him he climbed out of the coop, still holding the chicken in his mouth, and made a break for the open country. Upon reaching the fence he mounted the top rail and there sat down to see what Mrs. Kreuger was going to do about it. On his way up the fence he dropped the poultry, which ran off unharmed. Mrs. Kreuger, being doubtful of her ability to get away with a bear in a stand-up fight, retreated in good order to the house, and when the animal became tired of straddling a rail he got down and started off toward the woods. A bear was seen about ten days ago by Mrs. John Shuster and Mrs. Carmody. They had been picking berries and were returning home on an old logging road when the animal saw and followed them. The ladies let themselves out and reached home a little advance of the bear. Mr. Shuster armed himself and would doubtless have had bearsteak for breakfast if the brute had not given up the chase and departed without leaving his postofflce address. Mr. Shuster found the animal’s tracks, from which he was able to satisfy himself that the ladies had seen a real bear and one that could have done some of the hardest hugging ever witnessed in Egg Harbor outside of a dance at a barnraising.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyman D. Mowry recently visited friends and relatives at Kenosha and Milwaukee. They also stopped at Depere on their way south where they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Moffat and their daughter, Mrs. Morrison. They were caught out in the big blow last week while en route for Green Bay on the Moore and so badly shaken up that they laid over one day for repairs when they got on terra firma again.
Chris Demine having resigned his position as chairman of the town board, Chris. Stellwagen, one of the side members, was appointed to fill the vacancy, which was accepted by that gentleman.
