"Letter from the Front." from the September 8, 1864 Door County Advocate
Letter from the Front.
———
BEFORE ATLANTA, Aug. 20.
DEAR FATHER: For the last few days our communications with the North have been cut by the "Johnnies," and so for the present our mail facilities are things of the past and will soon, I hope, be things of the present. But in spite of all the efforts of the rebels to break our communications, the work of taking Atlanta goes steadily and bravely on, and I think in a short time we shall reap the rewards of our hard work.
Our right is closing in steadily on the rebel works, and will soon have their last railroad cut. Indeed it is reported that we have got possession of the road, but I cannot trace the report to any reliable source and do not think it is true.
We are having first rate weather, and the health of the regiment is very good. My health is first-rate—better than ever before.
The 32d Wisconsin is in line here close on our left, the second regiment on our left. They have lost some eleven or twelve men by stray shots. I guess they are rather sickly.
Our company has lost twenty-five men killed, wounded and missing, and the regiment about two hundred and fifty. HENRY HARRIS.
