“Gambling Campaign Goes On” from the August 10, 1945 Door County Advocate
GAMBLING CAMPAIGN GOES ON
With the first court cases under the new state anti-gambling law scheduled soon, agents of the beverage tax division continued last week to apprehend tavern-keepers for harboring gambling and to seize contraband gambling devices.
More than a thousand machines and pieces of equipment used in gambling games of one kind and another have thus far been confiscated by the state men.
Meanwhile various Wisconsin political reporters essayed into the Wisconsin northland, center of the resort trade and accustomed to public tolerance of commercialized gambling, to appraise public sentiment on the new Wisconsin law sponsored by the Woodland administration. Their conclusion: the northland doesn’t like the program, but the volume of tourist business is greater than ever.
