“Lenten Devotions” from the March 5, 1957 Door County Advocate
Lenten Devotions
—Door County Ministerial Association
Mark 14:26, “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives.” (These were Thy words, Heavenly Father, sanctify us in Thy Truth, Thy Word is Truth)
We would have enjoyed hearing that song, you and I. Judas was no longer with them—he had gone out into the night to take care of his evil business—and yet, a Song!
We Can hear them sing, can we not? As we listen outside that room in spirit almost two thousand years later, we can hear those sturdy men sing! In our Church and School choirs we are supposed to blend our voices as one. Perhaps the disciples were able to blend their voices, and yet, maybe we can hear an impetuous Peter, a steady John, a nervous Thomas, a well meaning Andrew, etc.
Is there not one voice which is most sweet, most full, most intense of all? Is it not the Voice of the Man of Galilee? Even more important, as Pastor Heimarck states in his book, “There is a song in the Passion of Christ.” Here is Music for the Soul! In the Passion of Christ may be found the Divine Words and Music which reach down deep into the inner soul of man and give him peace and satisfaction!
In this Season of Lent, review, and learn well the music of the Passion of Christ. Sing it and live it in a life dedicated to the Lamb of God, slain and risen. Amen.
Phillip A. Fretheim, Pastor,
Forest and Tanum Lutheran congregations.
