WASHINGTON ISLAND—Weather ceases to be news when the same kind prevails all over the state, but just for the record we can say that 16 inches of snow, more or less, have fallen here during the past week. However, temperatures have been much milder here than those reported in most parts of the state. We have had no sub-zero weather as yet. This is about as much snow as we had during all last winter. If it continues at this rate all winter, we will have what was called an “old fashioned winter.” The temperature on Sunday was so mild that the children had a wonderful time sliding down the hills with their sleds.
The Lions club gave their annual Christmas party for all school and pre-school children Saturday afternoon at Nelsen’s Hall. The two school buses picked up all of the children and returned them to their homes after the party. On arriving each child was given a bottle of pop. Several movies were shown to the children — one was a nature movie about little animals, one was a comedy, one was about the Life of Christ from birth to age 12, and the last one was Christmas songs. Following the movies, each child received a bag of candy and peanuts and an apple. They all reported having a good time, thanks to the Lions club.
Open house for Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Greenfeldt and baby Robert was held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17, at the Clifford Young home from 2 to 5 o’clock. A very large crowd attended. Nathan is in the U. S. Navy and has been stationed in Japan for several years. He just came from Japan to attend school in New Jersey. He and his family are visiting relatives here before going on to New Jersey.
Word has been received here of the marriage of Jerry Cornell, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Cornell, Washington Island, Wis., and Norah Shelley Dec. 1, 1961, at Huntington Beach, Calif. The young couple will be at home at 16372 Del Mar Lane, Huntington Beach, Calif. Congratulations.
Hamilton Rutledge, son of Dr. and Mrs. Paul E. Rutledge, Washington, Wis., and Charlene Imig, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Imig, Sheboygan, Wis., are engaged. The wedding date has been set for Feb. 24, 1962 at Sheboygan.
David Alvin Cornell is home on leave from the U. S. Navy. He will return to Boston, Mass., where he is stationed aboard the U. S. S. Wasp.
Kermit Jorgenson and Robert Young have gone to Benton Harbor, Mich., where they are employed aboard the Anderson potato boats.
Harold Hagen and Ben Johnson have returned home from a season of sailing on the lakes.
Howard Foss has also returned home from sailing, and he and Fern will go to Sturgeon Bay Dec. 19 to keep ship for the winter months.
Tillie Ellefson and Sigrid Gudmundsen went to Chicago Friday to spend some time with their respective children. They rode with Roger and Harold Hagen.
Mr. and Mrs. Mads Rohling left the Island Thursday and expect to be in Florida for Christmas with the Henry Rohlings (Eleanor Hansen).
Jake Bilton was rushed to Door County Memorial hospital Friday. He had been cared for at the Pearl Haglund home for the past week, but had not been well since potato harvest. His son, Elmer Bilton, came here from Virginia and accompanied him to the hospital. The ferry made a special trip, and he went by ambulance. Elmer Bilton’s mother is also quite ill in Milwaukee at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Gunnlaugson are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hanson (Muriel’s brother).
The Christmas program of the grade school was held Wednesday night, Dec. 20, at the Community House. Christmas school vacation began at the close of school Wednesday and will continue up to Jan. 2. 1962.
Vi Hansen expects to leave the Island Monday, Dec. 18, for the winter. Bernice Hanson will drive her down to Two Rivers, Wis., where she will visit the Ben Niemans for a while.
