LS FISHERMEN SPEND NIGHT ADRIFT ON BAY
Three Little Sturgeon fishermen, Connie Claflin, Charlie Claflin, and Vernon Gustafson were safely towed into port Tuesday morning after spending an uneventful night adrift on Green bay due to a balky engine.
Aboard the Kathleen, a 38-foot fish boat owned and operated by Connie Claflin, the trio was just preparing to return to Little Sturgeon from fishing grounds located near Green island at 1:30 Monday afternoon when the boat’s engine “conked out.”
The group was not actually missed until night although other fishermen knew they had finished lifting and resetting their nets. After a search early that evening, the coast guard was called.
After consulting with Chief Elmer Richter of the canal station, it was agreed that a searching party from the coast guard and one from Little Sturgeon, headed by Roy Claflin, would put out at daybreak to continue to look for the Kathleen.
At no time was any great fear expressed for the trio’s safety as they were in a seaworthy boat and had ample supplies and fuel aboard.
The Diane, skippered by Roy Claflin, found the Kathleen shortly after six Tuesday morning. Just prior to news that the rescue was affected, planes from the Cherryland airport were being readied to assist with the search.
