LST Passes Builders Trial Successfully
1167 Will Be Delivered To New Orleans Soon; Three Ships Still to Go
LST 1167, second of five ships of her class being built by the Christy corporation for the navy under a $32,000,000 contract, successfully underwent builders trials on Green Bay Saturday. The 384-ft. landing ship (tank) will leave at midnight Jan. 4 to be delivered to New Orleans for final fitting.
The 1166, first of the contract, just got more rigorous testing. After trials similar to those held Saturday, she was beached by Christy, then re-tested and beached again by the navy.
Christy men under Capt. Ed Anderson of Milwaukee handled at ’67 Saturday. A nucleus crew of navy men, who will, as the name implies, form the nucleus of the ship’s crew when she is commissioned, were also aboard for the trial.
Finish Contract In ’54
Tests included checks of navigational equipment and performance by the ship under emergency conditions. The ’67 went out as far as Chambers Island and returned in a din of salutes in mid-afternoon.
Commanding officer of the ’67 for the navy will be Lt. Cmdr. L. F. Lacy.
The remainder of the LST contract at Christy will be fulfilled by the end of 1954, according to company sources. One ship will be delivered in the spring, the other two in summer and fall.
