A DOOR COUNTY FLAG was raised for the first time Tuesday by the children of the late Jack Bergstrom who thought that unique as Door county was, it should also have a flag of its own. From left are Alan Bergstrom, John Ackerman, Gary Bergstrom, Mrs. Jack Bergstrom, Jackie Bergstrom, Randy Bergstrom, James Ebbeson, who carried on with the original idea, and artist Andy Redmann, who designed the flag. —Harmann
New county flag unfurled
A Door county flag was presented here Tuesday noon to the widow of the man whose idea it was to have an emblem for the popular resort peninsula.
Before his death in 1965 Jack Bergstrom, manager of the Door County Chamber of Commerce, had sounded out Door county artists about designing a flag. The one who took hold of the idea was Andrew Redmann, Fish Creek orchardist.
Bergstrom did not live long enough to see the sketch.
The flag is white, with emblem in blue and a vertical red stripe at the left. It is a mariner's wheel, with segments of the wheel and hand grips depicting various aspects of the county--a fiddle for the Peninsula Music Festival, classic masks for the Peninsula Players summer theater, a coffee pot for hospitality, skis, a factory, farm, woods and a sailboat all surrounding an outline of the peninsula.
The design has been copyrighted by Redmann and the rights have been assigned to the Door County Chamber of Commerce for its use. The Chamber will use any profits from the emblem for promotion of the county.
Atty. James Ebbeson of Sturgeon Bay, who worked with Redmann on the project, presided at the presentation luncheon at the Sturgeon Bay yacht club.
Mrs. Bergstrom and children Randy, 17, Gary, 10, Alan, 14, and Jaclyn, 13, received a framed sketch and the first flag. The children then hoisted the flag at the club pole.
Also present were members of Chamber and Door county boards, Assemblyman Lawrence Johnson, Redmann, and county businessmen and industrialists.
Barney Irwin, present Chamber manager, said the design would probably be used for decals as well as for large and small flags.

Ours not first County banner
Marinette county has taken exception to Door county's tentative claim to having the first county flag in Wisconsin.
The Door county banner was unveiled here last month and presented to Mrs. Jack Bergstrom, whose late husband promoted the idea. The flag was designed by Andy Redmann and depicts several aspects of peninsula life.
The Dec. 19 Green Bay Press Gazette story said Door's was the first county flag. The good gray Advocate did not make this claim.
Marinette county clerk Donald W. John filed a veritable legal brief to refute the newspaper
article's claim. It seems Marinette county had a flag design contest, won by a Crivitz woman. The flag has a dairy cow, a fish for sports and tourism, a flame for the Peshtigo fire, and red and blue lettering.
It was first flown and formally dedicated Aug. 30, 1964.
The Door county flag has not been officially adopted by the county government. It was a project of the Chamber of Commerce and a small group of interested citizens.
