Packer Cagers to Appear Here Well Known by Football Fans
When the Green Bay Packer basketball team comes here next week Friday night, February 27, to play the Sturgeon Bay city team at the local high school gym, cage fans who are planning to attend from all parts of the county will not be confronted by strangers. Every Packer player is widely known here for his part in the football team that for two years has copped the National league championship.
The Packers, although as basketball players have met with a number of defeats this season, have a strong aggregation and have beaten some of the best teams in the state. Their recent victory over Art Shire’s Milwaukee Badgers at Green Bay is the most outstanding.
Mike Michalske, who is manager of the cage team, plays guard. He was formerly with Penn State college, so does not lack experience on the basketball court.
Johnnie Blood, well known as the vagabond halfback, plays forward and is a star shot. He learned the game at St. John’s college.
Dave Zuidmueller, another forward, is a Green Bay boy who was a high school sensation a few years ago and Arnie Herber, another forward, is also a Green Bay boy. Herber was a star in high school and had promise of being a star at the University of Wisconsin but left to be married.
Boob Darling, who plays guard with the Packer five, is a former Beloit college star and later played with the Oshkosh city aggregation.
Weert Engelman, center, was an all-conference man while attending South Dakota State college.
O’Donnell, who recently joined the basketball team, formerly played with the Milwaukee Badgers.
Although very much out-weighed, the local team is fast and on its home floor expects to give the Packers plenty of trouble.
PACKER FIVE WINS OVER CITY CAGERS
—————
Big First Half Lead Too Hard to Overcome
—————
In one of the most exciting games of the season here and before a record crowd, the Green Bay Packer basketball team beat the Sturgeon Bay city team at the local gym last Friday night by a score of 42 to 36. The score at the half was 28 to 15, giving the visitors a lead that the Bays could not overcome although they narrowed the margin to only six points before the final whistle.
The locals throughout displayed a fine brand of ball that drew nothing but praise. Pitted against much larger and heavier men than themselves, they had the odds against them on the small floor, but time after time, speed and grit won over brawn, especially in the second half when the Bays scored 21 points to the Packers’ 14.
In the first half the Packers proved to be accurate shots. After trailing 6 to 2, they came back to lead at the end of the first period by a score of 18 to 9. Nearly every shot they tried went through the hoop, while the Bay’s shots, nearly as many in number, were hurried and missed.
The score by quarters follows:
G. B. Packers 18 10 6 8—42
Sturgeon Bay 9 6 7 14—36
Referee—Bahr (Ripon).
Technical Fouls — Blood of Packers, 1. Multiple Personals — Blood 1, Michalske 1, Kelly 1, Perry 3. Single Personals — Blood 2, Darling 1, Michalske 1, Sorenson 2.
