“Polygamy Must Go.” from the December 20, 1883 Door County Advocate
Polygamy Must Go.
The Mormon question will probably come up in Congress under very strong auspices. An immense lobby of Mormon elders has signified an intention of being in Washington this winter, for the purpose of defeating any hostile legislation, and a secret organization known as the National League for the Suppression of Polygamy, is making plans for a systematic and determined attack on this relic of barbarism, proposing to stop at nothing short of its extermination. This society has issued an address to the public calling for a general uprising of the people against this iniquity, and urging that petitions be extensively circulated praying congress to take immediate action for its suppression. Every citizen ought to co-operate in this effort. America is disgraced in the eyes of the world by tolerating this infamous institution of polygamy. We have heard enough of delay and dallying with this evil. Conventions have resolved, political parties have worked up capital, some good has been accomplished, but polygamy still exists, and will till a stalwart backbone, dead-in-earnest campaign is directed against it. Let the people take hold of this question earnestly and unitedly and polygamy will go.
