Sister Bay Lions give $1,000 to Scandia drive

The Sister Bay Lions Club, with a check for $1,000, heads the list of recent contributors toward the $75,000 in "seed money" which SCAND is trying to raise so it can construct a retirement center in Sister Bay.
The retirement center will include a 60 bed nursing home and 50 apartments for persons 62 years of age or older, along with a central dining room and other auxiliary services. The contribution was voted at the club's regular meeting Nov. 13 at the Sister Bay Bowl.
Are there too many old people In Door county? This is the sentiment expressed at one group meeting in Door county a short time ago. Assuming this were true, what should the community do about them? Abandon them on the ice as the Eskimos used to do? If this were proposed, probably the people who would raise the most objection would be those who have not yet seen fit to help SCAND provide a facility which would make available the kind of services older people need and enable them to live satisfactory, independent lives as long as possible.
Scandia Village, the retirement center which SCAND proposes to construct, will cost in excess of $3 million. SCAND is asking the community for $75,000, an infinitesimal part of the total cost, in order to get started. Once it is under way Scandia Village is designed to be completely self-supporting. Funds are needed now to buy land, pay for such things as technical surveys, sewer and water connections and the construction of model apartments.
Nov. 12 Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lachman opened up their restaurant, The Villager, in Egg Harbor for breakfast and contributed the gross income to SCAND. Although there was not much advance notice a total of $201.90 was realized.
Another organization supporting progressive facilities for the care of older people is the Peninsula Shrine Club which sent in a check for $200.
Checks for $100 were received from Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schwerin, Sister Bay; Betty Wiltse, Sister Bay; Mr. and Mrs. C. E: Gelhaar, Baileys Harbor, and two persons who wish to remain anonymous. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brandriff, Ephraim sent $50 in addition to a memorial to Lewis Pillsbury, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lapp, Gills Rock, contributed $25.
Unfortunately SCAND does not have a fleet of solicitors to go from door to door. It hopes that all those who feel the community should provide adequate facilities for the care of older people from any part of the county will voice their sentiments. It hopes they will not wait to be asked, but will take the initiative in sending a check or money, order, no matter how small or how large, to SCAND, Box 232 Sister Bay or to Wayne Williams, Treasurer, SCAND, Baileys Harbor, 54202. Contributions are tax deductible. They also are greatly appreciated.
