"The Excursion." from the August 1, 1867 Door County Advocate
The Excursion.
On last Friday evening the excursion out into Green Bay on the steamer Sarah Van Eps came off. By 7 o'clock a large company of the good people of Sturgeon Bay and vicinity had assembled, on board the Sarah when she cast off from the dock and proceeded on her way down the Bay with as merry a load as could conveniently be found in a days journey. The boat steamed out to Green Island and then back to the village arriving here about 11 o'clock P.M. The conjunction of a jolly crowd, a good roomy cabin, and several violins of course produced an expected, and to most, desired result, and from 8 o'clock until early next morning, the light fantastic toe was tripped with a zeal worthy of a better cause. As our friends well know, we, the junior, are opposed to dancing, but when we see a crowd go in and enjoy themselves as they did on the excursion, we overcome our objections far enough to look on without any severe qualms of conscience; especially so when we see the Senior go in so strong on dancing as he did on that occasion. As we circulated around among the dancers, and lookers-on like ourself, we heard but one expression as to the kind of time, and that was "bully," to which we responded "amen!" We know we echo but the sentiments of every one who participated on the occasion when we say that to Captain VANCE, Clerk ANTHONY, and balance of the officers of the Van Eps they are indebted for as well an arranged excursion, well carried out, and as good time as it has ever been their good fortune to enjoy.
