“The Passion Play.” from the March 1, 1902 Advocate
The Passion Play.
“The Passion Play,” the great religious drama, covering the life of Christ, as produced by the peasant people of Horitz and Ober-Ammergau, will be presented at St. Joseph church on Tuesday March 4 through the medium of the Cinematograph, or moving picture machine, which makes it possible for every one to witness a remarkably accurate reproduction of this great event, which, until recently, could only be seen by crossing the ocean.
There are about one hundred pictures shown, and every movement of the hundreds of people who take part in the performance is faithfully reproduced.
Preliminary to the Passion Play, several moving scenes of the village of Ober-Ammergau are shown, depicting the thousands of people from all parts of the world, who visited the famous village in the Summer of 1900, the theatre in which the play is given, and portraits of the leading actors. These scenes are followed by the moving-views of the plays itself, beginning with the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, picturing hundreds of men, women and children, thronging through the streets of Jerusalem to welcome the Saviour, and followed by the Last Supper, and the scenes incident to the betrayal of Judas, the trial of Christ, the scourging of the pillar and crowning with thorns, the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion and finally the Resurrection and Ascension.
The presentation throughout is said to be very impressive, and is endorsed by both Clergy and Press, for the vividness with which it pictures scriptural history.
Mr. Walter Kilrain’s interesting explanation and well-rendered baritone solos, makes the presentation unusually complete.
