PACKERS TO PLAY HERE TOMORROW
Clash With Maroons at High School Gym
What is expected to be the outstanding basketball event of the season will take place at the high school gym tomorrow night when the Green Bay Packers quintet meets the strong Sturgeon Bay Maroons, a team made up of seven players from the local amateur league. A preliminary game between a pick-up Amateur league team and Institute will begin at 8 p. m. and the main game at 9 p. m.
The Packers are well known in Sturgeon Bay, having played here both in 1932 and 1931. They won both local tilts by close scores, Herber being the leading scorer. This year’s line-up is practically the same as last year with the exception of the Zuidmuellers who are not in the outfit. In place of the latter are Al Rose, flashy Texas A. & M. forward, and Roger Grove, Michigan State guard. Others on the team are Herber and Bruder, forwards; Engleman, center; and Michalski, guard.
The Sturgeon Bay Maroons consists of Earl Anschutz and Hembel, centers; Funke and Perry, guards; and Sorenson, Rose and Joe Weber, forwards. The team has won from Ellison Bay, Egg Harbor and Institute, and has lost to New Franken, East Krok and the Kewaunee Blackhawks, the latter three all by close margins. No direct comparison of strength, between the Maroons and Packers is available, but New Franken, which beat the local team by one point, and the Packers lost both by about the same score when playing the stellar Pulaski team recently.
A large crowd is expected at the game here Saturday to see the popular professional gridders.

PACKERS WIN OVER MAROONS 43 - 36
—————
Get Stiff Opposition However; Trailed at Start
—————
A large crowd filled the bleachers of the high school gym last Saturday night and saw the suntanned Green Bay Packers, recently back from a grid expedition to Hawaii and California, beat the Sturgeon Bay Maroons in a close basketball game 43 to 36. The attendance was far more than expected in view of the Wisconsin bank holiday declared by Lieut. Governor O’Malley Friday. In fact, it was one of the best of the season here.
Although putting up a good fight, the local cagers were no match for the much larger and heavier Packers who seemed to explode into action almost at will when threatened. Anschutz made two baskets and Sorenson made one, all short shots, while the visitors had only a free throw in the opening few minutes. The quarter ended with the Maroons in the lead 11 to 6. Then Sorenson, diminutive forward, who played a scrappy game throughout, added another short shot to increase the lead. In the meantime, the Packers seemed to be loafing on the job. Their guarding was lax and their pace was slow on the offensive. Herber swished in a long shot, however, and from then on the visitors had things well in hand, making 16 more baskets while the locals made 10. The half ended 16 to 16, and the third quarter 30 to 21. Rose and Grove, new factors in the Packer line-up this season, were the outstanding stars.
Holding on tenaciously, the Maroons fought valiantly to stage a rally and gave the crowd a thrill when they crowled up to within four points of their opponents by the middle of the fourth period. Rose, Maroon guard, made a field goal from outside the free throw circle, but Al Rose and Hank Bruder countered with two short ones for the Packers. Sorenson then made a free throw, on Michalski’s personal, and Anschutz caged two layup shots in rapid succession, making the score 34 to 28. Grove flashed into the open for another short shot, but Hembel came back with a pretty one from close in and Perry with a long one equally as pretty to narrow the Packer lead to four points.
The lanky Al Rose slipped in another Packer field goal, however, to widen the gap, and then Grove did similarly after Hembel scored. Perry followed, with the last Bay basket, making the count 40 to 36, but Grove made a gift shot on Anschutz’ personal and Al Rose easily pushed in his seventh field goal of the evening to rid any idea the Maroons had of being able to tie up the count in the closing couple of minutes.
The score by periods follows:
Sturgeon Bay . . 11 5 5 15—36
Packers . . . . . . 6 10 14 13—43
The box score of the game:
