"Twelfth Reg't. again on the March—Alotments." from the June 7, 1862 Door County Advocate
Twelfth Reg't. again on the March—Alotments.—The 12th regiment is back again near Leavenworth, waiting for further orders, and steamers to take them down river. Harry writes on the 27th: "Kansas 1st, and 8th Wis. Battery who came with us from Fort Riley, left this morning for Leavenworth, expecting to find boats there, to take them down the river. We may move before noon." We are glad to notice, that all of our Sturgeon Bay soldier boys are alive to the importance of taking care of their money, instead of squandering it away on camp followers, and the Sutler; when pay day comes round, their first thought is home, and they very prudently send a large am't to their families, either to help the old folks, or for safe keeping, until the war is over. When the Alotment Commissioners visited the boys, they eagerly embraced the excellent plan, by alloting a large proportion of their pay to be sent home, which speaks well for the prudence, and forethought of all, and shows that they have been trained in a school of correct principles; it is a source of much gratification, that on the first experience of their being away from home influence, they have struck out on the right path, and we feel sure, that all such boys will keep in it.
