“Two Kinds of Animals” and “One Worlders” from the 1958 Door County Advocate

Two Kinds of Animals
A leading state Republican woman pays an unintended compliment to a Democrat in a recent release from the state GOP headquarters. She calls Robert Moses, Farm Union broadcaster, “the top one-worlder in the state of Wisconsin today.”
In 1940 Wendell Willke ran for president on the Republican ticket and later wrote a book called “One World.” Isn’t Wendell in good repute in state GOP circles? This dilemma is explained by the fact that there are two kinds of Republican animals in Wisconsin, the Pachydermus Brickertaft and the Pachydermus Eisenhower. Although the former give lip service to the latter they would just as soon see it eat poisoned giraffe meat. Between elections this sentiment sometimes rears its ugly and obvious head.
Until there is “one world” we will always have strife. Pursuing this goal is praiseworthy, at least among most animals.

ONE WORLDERS
There is a well known adage that says: What this Country needs is fewer Democrats and Republicans and more Americans. Perhaps we can add a new name now, “One Worlders.”
According to your recent editorial some Republican women paid an “unintentional compliment” to Robert Moses for being Wisconsin’s leading One Worlder. Whether being a leading One Worlder is a position to be complimented or condemned, it certainly is a position to be examined.
I can’t help but hear the old familiar co-existing ring.
Could it be that these O. W.’s are nothing more than a group of politically immature neo-intellectuals who can’t agree on any thing more than a naive dream of super government? A master plan of peace at any price. A plan to scuttle the very way of life that allows their existence.
Whether intentional or by coincidence these plans run parallel to the goals of international Communism, complete destruction of individual freedom and capitalism. There isn’t any wonder why Soviet Russia abandoned the American Communist party, they don’t need it any more, there’s enough psychopathic egotists, left wingers, free traders and political pollutionists here today to destroy Americanism twice as fast as the Communists had planned.
As an example of how a group of intellectual revolutionists can destroy a country by seemingly innocent propaganda take the now defunct Institute of Pacific Relations. The record shows how they proceeded to undermine American foreign policy in regard to Nationalist China, by effective use of well timed press releases, they destroyed Chinese prestige in the public mind and stopped arms and financial aid.
The story is pretty well covered by a new book called “Soviet Russia in China.” As a result 450 million people were lost to Communist slavery.
Today we have a new threat for more sinister things and with the full approval of the One Worlders.
This comes under the label, International Organization for Trade Cooperation or O.T.C. It proposes to use N.A.T.O. as a foundation for an economic and military super government.
What does this mean? Simply this: the free import of goods into this country irrespective of the effect on American industry and agriculture.
As an example of what could happen look at the American plywood industry today. While this industry is in a severe slump the government allows practically unrestricted importing of plywood from Japan. Think of what would happen to the dairy industry if we were to allow the free importing of dairy products and vegetable oils.
We as American citizens must wake up. Freedom is slipping through our fingers one grain at a time. Could it be that while we preoccupied ourselves with wage raises, missiles and adult Westerns the enemy we prepare to annihilate in a hydrogen holocaust has striped democracy to a helpless useless dogma of unworkable ideas.
I say we must trade with other friendly nations. But we must keep uppermost in our minds first what is good for America, second what is good for the free world. Third what will do the most damage to international communism.
Remember, a free and strong America is the only force that stands between freedom and the enslavement of the world by imperial soviet colonialism.
The choice is ours. Will it be old fashioned tried and proven freedom, or some One Worlders’ insane idea of ultra-modern slavery?
