NASEWAUPEE — The Ladies Aid Society of Salem Lutheran church, R. 4, entertained their families at a barbecue supper Sunday evening, July 21. Chefs at the grills were the Rev. O. C. Henning and Virgil Ash. About 35 persons were there.
Sunday guests of the John Lopas family, MM, R. 4, were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Lopas of Neenah. They were happy to see his brother Alvin and wife, Virginia, from Anaheim, Calif. Alvin has owned a chicken ranch in Anaheim the past seven years. The population there has grown and the area is now crowded. It was necessary to discontinue the chicken business. With no work worries for a little while what could be better than a vacation in beautiful Wisconsin? That included a trip to Nasewaupee in Door county for ripe cherries.
The eclipse of the sun Saturday afternoon was of interest to the local youngsters. They were warned not to look at it unless their eyes were protected. Arthur Lopas, 8, son of the John Lopas', R. 4. solved that problem by looking at the eclipse through two welders helmets. He put one on and focused the dark glass of the other so that he could look directly at the eclipse. It made a fine showing. He watched it from the beginning to the end and saw the total eclipse from Canada on the TV.
The cloud formation Friday evening about 8:00 to the north was spectacular. It looked as if we were in for terrific storm but it was mostly wind and some gentle rain.
Guests for luncheon and the afternoon at the Carl Roder's, MM, R. 4. on Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Roedell, Peoria, Ill. Their two children David, 10, and Claudia, 7, are the same age as the Roder youngsters so they had great fun. Mrs. Roedell is the former Pearl Wetak, daughter of Mrs. Lane Wetak, Maple st.
The cherry harvest is in full swing on R. 4 this Monday, July 22. The John Weckler orchard had many people for picking for themselves Sunday. The sudden rain at 2:00 chased everyone out of the orchards but there were more there again by 3:30.
HAIL HIT CORN
The Milton Seilers, R. 4, reported the hail shredded their corn in the sudden rain and windstorm Sunday afternoon.
Saturday afternoon the Earl Roders, R. 4, took in the fair at Luxemburg. Carl Roder, R. 4, also went with his three children, Marsha, Janice and James. They stayed for the evening performance before the grandstand.
Are you looking for a treat for the kiddies? Why not try Aqualand — it's great fun. That is. if you are well supplied with nickels and dimes. You need nickels to buy corn for the deer and dimes for pop to feed the bears. You won't get by with one bottle either. Those bears are thirsty. You'll need several dimes for popcorn for the kiddies as well as the ducks, fish and raccoons. Even the deer eat popcorn. It is a big experience for the youngsters to have the deer eat from their hands. What fun it is to watch the duck play the piano, but only if you put the dime in the machine. Dimes also go in the machine to watch the bunnies kiss. Our youngsters all had to buy postcards from the hen. She even says thank you.
Daniel Roder, son of the Sylvester Roder's, R. 4, is spending a few days with his cousin Nathan Page, Menasha, Wis. The Pages live on Lake Butte des Morts so the boys have a fine time fishing and boating.
Ice cream socials are summertime fare. The youth of the Sawyer Methodist church sponsored an ice-cream social Friday evening at the church parlors. To that event Mrs. H. Roder, R. 4, went with 10 of her grandchildren. It is one of her many treats for the grandchildren every year. She wasn't the only grandmother treating the grandchildren to the goodies. In the short time we were there we saw the Ed. Krause's of Lansing av. with their two grandsons. Mrs. Minnie Dombrowski, of Maple st., was there with her granddaughter. Billy and Barbara Roder were also there with their grandmother, Mrs. Sylvester Roder, R. 4. The pastor, Rev. P. Mekkelson helped the young people serve the social goers.
Mrs. Sylvester Roder, R. 4, entertained her nieces and nephews at an afternoon lunch on Tuesday afternoon. It was in honor of Miss Janell Roder, Jefferson, Wis., who is vacationing at the Roder Farms, MM, R. 4.
