“What Will the Cleanup Be?” from the March 30, 1934 Door County Advocate
WHAT WILL THE CLEANUP BE?
The CWA has had its trial at restoring prosperity, and with many of the other alphabetic projects launched by the federal administration has surrendered its place to some other project that bears different letters of the alphabet.
The many rainbows that appeared on the horizon with the introduction of the CWA soon disappeared and the beautiful drives along the lake shore and bay are now only visions of the past.
However, out of the $200,000 spent, many things were accomplished that will remain as a permanent reminder that the CWA was a help to tide over three of the hardest months that Door county usually encounters.
Now comes cleaning up the remnants of unfinished projects. It is going to take considerable money in many instances to put the house back in order, and governmental units throughout the county are worried to know from what source the money is to be raised. Greater part of the school house work was completed, but there remains some work still to do that will require money. Roads and parks in most instances can be left as they were when the CWA work ended, but even this is rather an unsatisfactory ending.
It appears that Sturgeon Bay has more of a problem on its hands than other places in the county. Larger projects were started here and time did not permit their completion. The Little Lake project will have to be made more presentable than the way it was left. As it now is it is an eyesore to those who visit the city park or drive along North Cedar street, which is a popular drive for tourists.
South Cedar street’s Memorial Drive is also in an unfinished state, and will require considerable work and money to put it in any kind of a presentable appearance, and the street will require something done to keep the dust down.
The Sawyer schoolhouse grounds will also require attention, as it has not been left in condition for a playground, but probably this can be completed without a great deal expenditure of money.
The airport, if carried out according to contract entered into by the city, will require a large investment, and little work has as yet been done to make it an attractive landing field.
The taxpayers will be interested in not only being kept well informed as to the cost of completing these projects, but as to how much money it was necessary for the city to spend on different projects while under CWA.
