Fellowship to Thor Johnson to Study Music
Friends of the Rev. and Mrs. H. B. Johnson of Winston-Salem, N. C., formerly of this city, will be interested to know that the couple's son, Thor, has been awarded a liberal fellowship from the Frank Huntington Beebe fund and sails Saturday for Salzburg, Germany, for a year's study of music abroad. He won the fellowship recently when invited by the fund's judges to conduct the Boston Civic Symphony orchestra.
Two years ago the young virtuoso, who made an enviable reputation as a violo player in high school and the University of North Carolina where he also directed the college orchestra, went to the University of Michigan to study for his master's degree. During the past winter, the director of the Boston symphony, visiting the university, was so impressed by the young man's work that he arranged for his fellowship audition.
