“Urges Observing Good Friday Here” from the March 18, 1932 Door County Advocate
URGES OBSERVING GOOD FRIDAY HERE
—————
Asks Stores to Close for Three Hours, 12:00 to 3:00 P. M.
—————
The observance of Good Friday in Sturgeon Bay by having business houses close during the “Three Hours,” 12:00 to 3:00 p. m., or at least allow employees a leave of absence for that period so they may attend one of the many Good Friday services held at the various churches, has been urged this week in a notice signed by the Knights of Columbus and the pastors of seven local churches.
“The undersigned are convinced that a common observance of Good Friday is in keeping with the highest interests of all the people of our city, and that it leaves a valuable impress for good on the entire citizenship, producing a wholesome effect both in our homes and in our business,” the appeal states.
“Good Friday commemorates the death of our Divine Lord and Master. To pause for a few hours and contemplate together the vital import of His Work and Message to humanity cannot fail to be highly beneficial to all.
“In keeping with this spirit, the undersigned representatives of Christian communions in the City of Sturgeon Bay, as in previous years, have united in an appeal to the public for a general observance of the Three Sacred Hours.”
Signing the appeal are the Catholic parishes as represented by the Knights of Columbus, the St. Peter’s Lutheran church, Bay View Lutheran church, Sawyer Methodist church, Moravian church, Congregational church, Methodist – Episcopal church, Friends church, and Seventh Day Adventist church.
